Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle leaned into the character's grief-driven brutality, and the film found a devoted following on home video that outlasted its modest theatrical run.
