Lionsgate's 2004 adaptation of The Punisher arrived at a moment when Marvel properties were being reconsidered as serious cinematic territory in the wake of the X-Men and Spider-Man franchises. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, the film leaned into a grittier, more grounded register than its contemporaries, drawing heavily from Garth Ennis's comics run and positioning Frank Castle as a figure of grief as much as vengeance.
