Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a new generation. Thomas Jane stepped into the role of Frank Castle, a former FBI agent turned one-man war against organized crime after the murder of his family. The film arrived during a period of renewed studio interest in Marvel properties and offered a grittier, more grounded take than the 1989 Dolph Lundgren version that preceded it.
