Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle brought a brooding, methodical quality to the character that distinguished the film from its 1989 predecessor, and the Tampa-shot production remains a notable entry in the early wave of Marvel adaptations that preceded the studio era.
