Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle leaned into grief and obsession rather than spectacle, and the film found a devoted following on home video that outlasted its modest theatrical run. It remains a touchstone of the mid-2000s Marvel licensing era, before the studio consolidations that followed.
