Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle leaned into grief and methodical vengeance rather than spectacle, giving the film a grounded register unusual for the genre at the time. It remains a notable entry in the early wave of Marvel adaptations preceding the studio era.
