Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and starring Thomas Jane in the title role, the film occupies an interesting position in the early wave of Marvel theatrical productions, predating the studio's own unified universe by several years. Shot on location in Tampa, Florida, it carries a grittier, more grounded texture than its contemporaries.
