Lionsgate Films released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action cinema. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle brought a grounded, revenge-driven intensity that distinguished the film from the era's more polished superhero fare, and it remains a touchstone of mid-2000s genre filmmaking.
