FILM NOTES

Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and starring Thomas Jane, the film leaned into gritty revenge drama rather than superhero spectacle, positioning itself as a harder-edged alternative to the era's emerging comic book blockbusters. It occupies an interesting transitional moment in Marvel's cinematic history, predating the unified universe and reflecting the looser, studio-by-studio licensing era.

This cell captures Howard Saint, the film's primary antagonist portrayed by John Travolta, standing in an elegantly appointed interior space. The ornate background detail visible behind him reflects the production design used to establish Saint as a figure of wealth and menace. Three frames drawn from the same continuous shot offer subtle movement variation, preserving a quiet, composed moment from one of the film's central performances.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
