FILM NOTES

Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complex action. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, the film leaned into grindhouse sensibility while maintaining a studio budget, positioning Thomas Jane's Frank Castle alongside a strong ensemble of character actors. It occupies a distinct moment in the early wave of Marvel adaptations before the unified cinematic universe reshaped the genre entirely.

This cell captures Howard Saint, the film's primary antagonist, in a sustained moment of quiet authority. Played by John Travolta, Saint stands within an ornate interior, papers in hand, surrounded by warm sconce lighting and decorative ironwork — a composition that communicates wealth and control without a single word of dialogue. It is a rare still portrait of the villain in his own domain.
