Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complex action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle brought a grounded brutality to the character, and the film found a devoted following on home video that outlasted its modest theatrical run. It remains a touchstone of early 2000s Marvel adaptations, predating the studio era that would reshape superhero cinema entirely.
