FILM NOTES

The Nightmare Before Christmas arrived in October 1993 under the Touchstone Pictures banner, produced by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick. Shot entirely in stop-motion animation, the film represented a landmark achievement in the format, requiring years of painstaking frame-by-frame work and establishing a visual language that influenced genre filmmaking for decades. Its blend of gothic sensibility with holiday iconography found an audience that has only grown in the years since its release.

This cell, titled Santa Jack, captures the atmospheric climax in which Jack Skellington commandeers Christmas, presenting the angular sleigh traced in multicolored lights against a turbulent purple-black sky alive with lightning. The three-frame sequence holds the same striking composition throughout, preserving a moment that sits at the emotional and narrative center of the film.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
