FILM NOTES

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas was released by Touchstone Pictures in October 1993, produced through Burton's collaboration with director Henry Selick and stop-motion studio Skellington Productions. The film marked a turning point for animated features, demonstrating that the medium could sustain a genuinely dark, gothic sensibility for mainstream audiences. Its handcrafted aesthetic, built frame by painstaking frame, gave it a tactile quality that distinguished it from contemporary cel animation.

This cell, titled Santa Jack, captures Jack Skellington amid the chaos of Oogie Boogie's lair — smoke, sparks, and the mechanical trap contraption filling the frame against a deep black background. The sequence belongs to the film's climactic confrontation, a visually dense moment where the production's stop-motion craft is pushed to its most theatrical extreme.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
