FILM NOTES

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas was released by Touchstone Pictures in October 1993, produced through Burton's collaboration with director Henry Selick and Disney. Shot entirely in stop-motion animation, the film represented a landmark in the technique's ambition and scale, requiring years of painstaking frame-by-frame work. Its dark, expressionist visual language and Danny Elfman's score gave it a singular identity that has kept it in continuous cultural circulation for over three decades.

This three-frame sequence, titled Santa Jack, captures Jack Skellington mid-flight in his Santa Claus costume during the Christmas Eve delivery sequence. Shot from below against a deep, unlit background, the low angle gives Jack an imposing, theatrical presence. The sequential frames preserve the motion inherent to stop-motion craft, each subtle shift between images a reminder of the physical labor behind every second of the finished film.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
