FILM NOTES

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas was released by Touchstone Pictures in October 1993, produced through Burton's collaboration with director Henry Selick and composer Danny Elfman. Shot entirely in stop-motion animation, the film represented a landmark achievement in the craft, requiring years of painstaking frame-by-frame work. Its blend of gothic imagery with musical storytelling earned it enduring cultural status and a devoted following that has only grown in the decades since its release.

This trio of consecutive 35mm frames captures a moment from Oogie Boogie's lair, the dimly lit, mechanically dressed setting rendered in warm amber and orange tones. Titled The Halloween Town Band by the operator, the cells show the large, looming silhouette of Oogie Boogie positioned over a smaller bound figure, with slight movement variation between frames — a natural artifact of the stop-motion process that gives the sequence its characteristic fluid tension.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
