Produced by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick, The Nightmare Before Christmas was released by Touchstone Pictures in October 1993. The film represented a landmark achievement in stop-motion animation, bringing a feature-length dark fantasy to mainstream audiences and demonstrating that the medium could sustain an entire musical narrative.
