FILM NOTES

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas was released by Touchstone Pictures in October 1993, produced through Burton's collaboration with director Henry Selick and composer Danny Elfman. The film brought stop-motion animation to mainstream audiences with a sophistication rarely attempted at the time, blending gothic imagery with musical storytelling. Its influence on animation, design, and popular culture has only deepened in the decades since its release.

This 35mm cell captures Jack Skellington in a sequence shot from directly overhead, suspended against a dark background with diagonal rigging visible above him. Across three frames, the incremental shifts in his position reveal the painstaking craft of stop-motion production, where each movement was physically staged and photographed. The overhead perspective gives the cell an unusual compositional quality within the film's visual catalog.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
