FILM NOTES

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas was released by Touchstone Pictures in October 1993, produced through Burton's collaboration with director Henry Selick and stop-motion studio Skellington Productions. The film marked a turning point for feature animation, demonstrating that the painstaking frame-by-frame puppet technique could sustain a full theatrical release with genuine emotional weight. Its gothic visual language and Danny Elfman score gave it a cultural staying power few animated films of its decade have matched.

This three-frame 35mm strip is titled Mummy Boy and captures consecutive moments within Oogie Boogie's dungeon lair — the wooden trap structure, ornate brass fittings, and dark cave walls rendered in characteristic detail. The tight compositional consistency across all three frames reflects the deliberate, controlled nature of stop-motion production, where each exposure is a discrete physical arrangement held just long enough for a single frame of film.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
