FILM NOTES

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas was released by Touchstone Pictures in October 1993, produced through Burton's collaboration with director Henry Selick and Disney. The stop-motion feature stood apart from contemporary animation for its gothic visual language and willingness to treat dark themes within a family framework. Its influence on character design, merchandise, and the broader acceptance of macabre aesthetics in mainstream entertainment has only grown in the decades since its release.

This cell, titled Lock, Shock and Barrel by the operator, captures a moment inside Oogie Boogie's lair, where the imposing villain figure looms over a smaller captive near a wooden post against a stone floor. The purple-toned frames appear to be consecutive or near-identical exposures from the same scene, offering a rare glimpse into the repetitive rhythm of stop-motion production itself.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
