Pokemon 3: The Movie was released in North America in April 2001 by Miramax Films under its family label, distributed in partnership with Nintendo and 4Kids Entertainment. The third entry in the theatrical Pokemon series, it arrived at the height of the franchise's cultural dominance and featured a notably darker emotional core than its predecessors, centering on themes of loss and illusion through the Unown and the young girl Molly Hatcher.

The cell titled Team Rocket Swimming captures Jessie, James, and Meowth across three frames of a continuous shot, the trio appearing small against an expansive blue field framed by a flowering hedge consistent with the Greenfield garden sequences. Jessie was voiced by Rachael Lillis, James by Eric Stuart, and Meowth by Madeleine Blaustein, also credited as Maddie Blaustein.
