Pokémon: The Movie 2000 was released in Japan in 1999 and internationally by Warner Bros. in 2000, arriving at the peak of the global Pokémon phenomenon. The second theatrical entry in the franchise expanded the mythology beyond Mewtwo, centering on the Legendary birds and the ocean guardian Lugia. It remains a defining artifact of late-1990s animation and the cultural moment when Pokémon crossed from television into cinematic event territory.

This cell captures Lugia in extended-wing flight against the film's distinctive swirling, nebula-like sky, drawn from the celebrated sequence in which Ash and Pikachu ride on Lugia's back.
