Pokémon: The Movie 2000 was released in North America by Warner Bros. Pictures in July 2000, following the unprecedented cultural wave that the Pokémon franchise had built through its animated series and trading card game. The film centered on the legendary bird Pokémon and the threat of global catastrophe, and represented a peak moment for the franchise's theatrical ambitions during the height of the late-1990s Pokémon phenomenon.
