Autograph Authentication
Crown Verified
The autograph appearing on this 1997 Donruss Signature Series Significant Signatures card (numbered 1892/2000) is consistent with known exemplars of Al Kaline's signature and is supported by Donruss's independent authentication performed at the time of manufacture, as this series was produced with on-card autographs obtained directly from the signers. The signature is executed in dark ink across the card face, displaying Kaline's characteristic sweeping capital "A," fluid connective strokes, and a prominent capital "K" that flows into a compressed but cohesive "aline" — all hallmarks observed in authenticated Kaline specimens from this period. Letter formation, ink medium, and placement are fully consistent with the established characteristics of Al Kaline's hand. Crown Grading is satisfied that this autograph is genuine.
Card Notes
The 1997 Donruss Signature Series represented a pivotal moment when autographed cards transitioned from novelty to mainstream collecting. This release established the template for premium signed sets that followed, featuring on-card signatures from established stars rather than redemptions or reprints. The series became a foundational reference point for collectors pursuing authentic autographs of their favorite players from multiple eras.
Al Kaline's inclusion here captures the Tigers legend during an era when living Hall of Famers were actively participating in card signings. Collectors seek this card for its straightforward appeal—a genuine Kaline signature paired with his iconic imagery, offering a tangible connection to one of baseball's greats from a pivotal moment in autograph card history.
