FILM NOTES

Pokémon: The First Movie arrived in November 1999 through Warner Bros., riding the crest of a cultural wave that had already swept American television and toy aisles. Produced in Japan and localized for Western audiences, it served as the franchise's theatrical debut in the United States, introducing the engineered Pokémon Mewtwo as a central figure of conflict and sympathy. The film's commercial success helped cement Pokémon as a lasting force in global entertainment, and its promotional trailer reels remain sought after as artifacts of that breakout moment.

This piece carries the promise of the trailer itself, a preview strip meant to stir anticipation ahead of release, and its focus on Mewtwo's Arena points to the standoff at the heart of the story. Mewtwo, the cloned Pokémon born of scientific ambition, stands apart from the franchise's more approachable creatures, drawing collectors who value its weight as a symbol of power and isolation. A stand-off implies tension and stakes, the kind of early marketing imagery designed to signal a darker, more dramatic entry into the Pokémon world.

Authentication Findings 8 checks

Consistent with a 35mm Dolby Digital release print of the Pokémon: The First Movie trailer (1999).

Gauge
35mm: four perforations span each frame along both edges, and the strip holds three complete frames.
Perforations
Four per frame on both the top and bottom edges, evenly spaced, with rounded-rectangle holes that look cleanly punched.
Soundtrack
A two-track variable-area optical track runs beside the picture; the bottom perforation gaps hold Dolby Digital data blocks, so this is a dual-format print.
Edge print
Not visible in this capture
Base & colour
Clear base with a faint light-blue edge tint; the dye image looks neutral, with warm cream and blue-purple tones and no obvious fading.
Projection history
No scratches, splices or cue marks seen at this size.
Picture
Positive image; the three frames are near-identical consecutive frames of one shot, and the animated look fits the Pokémon film on record.
Era check
Optical track plus Dolby Digital blocks on a positive print is consistent with a late-1990s 35mm theatrical release print, matching a 1999 trailer.

Why so little survivesRelease prints were leased to theaters, not sold. When the run ended they went back to the distributor to be destroyed, and most were. What collectors hold today came from the prints that escaped that order, and no new 35mm prints of these films are being struck.
