FILM NOTES
Pokémon: The First Movie arrived in 1999 through Warner Bros. and Nintendo's licensing machine at the height of Pokémania, bringing the franchise from television to American theaters for the first time. Promoted heavily through trailers that teased a darker, more operatic tone than the series' usual adventures, the film centered on Mewtwo, a genetically engineered Pokémon wrestling with questions of purpose and identity. It became a cultural touchstone for a generation of young collectors and remains a cornerstone release in Pokémon's theatrical history.
This cell comes from the trailer reel, promotional footage cut to build anticipation ahead of the film's release, making it a document of the marketing campaign itself rather than the finished feature. Mewtwo's Arena points to the character's central role as antagonist and tragic figure, the engineered Pokémon whose confrontation drives the story's stakes. Pokémon Stand-Off suggests the tension built into that setting, while Pokémon Group signals the ensemble gathered against him. Mewtwo remains one of the franchise's most sought-after characters among collectors, and trailer cells featuring him carry particular appeal as artifacts of the film's earliest public presentation.
Authentication Findings8 checks
Consistent with a 35mm release trailer print of Pokémon: The First Movie (1999).
Gauge
35mm layout, four perforations per frame along both edges, and the strip holds three frames, two of them identical and one different.
Perforations
Four per frame on both the top and bottom edges, rounded-rectangle holes, evenly spaced and cleanly punched with no visible tearing.
Soundtrack
A variable-area optical track of two parallel waveform tracks runs between the picture and the lower perforations; no Dolby Digital blocks, DTS line or SDDS tracks are visible.
Edge print
Not visible in this capture
Base & colour
Light blue-tinted clear base at the edges with a neutral image area; the dye image looks bright and shows no obvious fading or colour shift.
Projection history
None seen at this size; no scratches, cue marks or splices are visible on the strip.
Picture
Positive colour image; the first two frames repeat the same view and the third is a different shot, so they are not one continuous shot. The animated content fits a Pokémon title.
Era check
A two-track optical soundtrack on a clean light-blue base is consistent with a 1999 35mm trailer print, though digital data in the gaps cannot be judged from this view.

Why so little survivesRelease prints were leased to theaters, not sold. When the run ended they went back to the distributor to be destroyed, and most were. What collectors hold today came from the prints that escaped that order, and no new 35mm prints of these films are being struck.
