FILM NOTES

Pokémon: The First Movie arrived in 1999 from Warner Bros. and Nintendo's licensing machine at the peak of Pokémania, when the franchise was transforming from a Game Boy curiosity into a theatrical juggernaut. The trailer that preceded it was a cultural event in its own right, screened before other family films to whip up anticipation months ahead of release. For a generation of young audiences this was their first glimpse of Pokémon rendered for the big screen, a signal that the property had outgrown television and handheld cartridges and could command a full theatrical campaign of its own.

This cell gathers Hitmonlee, Venusaur, Sandslash, and Scyther under the designation Pokémon Group, a 35mm frame from that landmark trailer. Each of these creatures was already familiar from the games and television series, making their presence here a marker of the franchise's early roster being assembled for promotional purposes. A trailer cell like this one exists to sell anticipation itself, a fragment of film manufactured to circulate in theaters and stir recognition before the feature ever opened. For collectors, this grouping represents an early physical artifact of that marketing push, tying four established characters to the moment Pokémon claimed the cinema.

Authentication Findings 8 checks

Consistent with a 35mm release trailer print of Pokémon: The First Movie (1999).

Gauge
Four perforations per frame along both edges, consistent with 35mm; the strip holds three frames.
Perforations
Four per frame on both the picture-side and sound-side edges, evenly spaced, rounded-rectangle shaped and cleanly punched with no visible tearing.
Soundtrack
A twin variable-area optical track runs beside the picture; no Dolby Digital blocks between the sound-side perforations, and no DTS timecode or SDDS tracks are visible.
Edge print
Not visible in this capture
Base & colour
Pale blue-grey base; the dye image looks saturated and balanced, with no red shift or fading visible.
Projection history
None seen at this size; no scratches, cue marks or splices are visible on these three frames.
Picture
Positive colour image; the three frames repeat one near-identical shot consecutively, and the animated Pokémon artwork matches the film on record.
Era check
A twin variable-area optical track on colour positive stock fits a 1999 35mm release print or trailer, though the lack of Dolby Digital data blocks means no digital format is shown.

Why so little survivesRelease prints were leased to theaters, not sold. When the run ended they went back to the distributor to be destroyed, and most were. What collectors hold today came from the prints that escaped that order, and no new 35mm prints of these films are being struck.
