FILM NOTES

Pokémon: The Movie Trailer (1999) arrived as Warner Bros. and Nintendo prepared American audiences for Pokémon: The First Movie, riding the franchise's explosive crossover from Japanese cartridge game to global children's phenomenon. The trailer reel itself is a piece of marketing history, cut and distributed to theaters to build anticipation months ahead of the feature's release. For collectors of early Pokémon film ephemera, 35mm promotional material from this window is scarce, representing the moment the brand pushed beyond television into mainstream cinema.

This cell preserves a moment from that trailer centered on Ash Ketchum, the series' young trainer and its enduring protagonist, acting to rescue his Pokémon. Ash's presence alone makes a cell desirable among character-driven collectors, as he anchors nearly every arc of the franchise's storytelling. A rescue beat promises stakes and loyalty, themes central to the show's appeal, and trailer cells like this one offer a glimpse of how early marketing chose to frame Ash's role before wider audiences had met him.

Authentication Findings 8 checks

Consistent with a 35mm release print of the Pokémon: The Movie trailer (1999).

Gauge
35mm: four perforations per frame along both edges, and the strip holds four complete frames.
Perforations
Four per frame on both edges, evenly spaced, rounded-rectangle holes that look cleanly punched with no torn or missing perforations.
Soundtrack
A variable-area optical track runs between the picture and the lower perforations, and Dolby Digital data blocks sit in the gaps between the lower perforations.
Edge print
Upper edge reads, mirrored: "2383 187 341 1 30 KODAK 28 1999 L", which is Kodak print stock text with a 1999 date code.
Base & colour
Pale blue-tinted base with a neutral to slightly cool dye image; no red shift or fading seen.
Projection history
None seen at this size; the frames and track look clean, with no visible scratches, cue marks or splices.
Picture
Positive image; the four frames run consecutively as one shot, and the animated look fits an anime-style film such as the one on record.
Era check
Consistent: Kodak 2383 print stock, a 1999 edge date, and an optical track plus Dolby Digital data suit a 1999 35mm release print.
Read from the original intake capture shown below. Observations only — film is authenticated, not graded.
This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
Why so little survivesRelease prints were leased to theaters, not sold. When the run ended they went back to the distributor to be destroyed, and most were. What collectors hold today came from the prints that escaped that order, and no new 35mm prints of these films are being struck.
